About April Naturale, MSW, Ph.D.

I am a Traumatic Stress Specialist, a licensed, independent clinical social worker, with a doctorate in clinical social work, based in Orleans, Massachusetts. I am licensed in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Texas. I am also nationally certified by the ACSW. It has been my privilege over the past 30 years to work with individuals and families suffering from various types of traumatic stress, psychological distress and emotional problems, as well as the effects of disasters, other forms of trauma, and violence. I provide various consultation on program development, operational and psychological debriefing, stress management, and secondary traumatic stress interventions for individuals and organizations as well as direct services including clinical care to clients and supervision to therapists.

I earned my MSW from Columbia University and my Doctorate from New York University where I studied the effects of secondary traumatic stress in those who have responded to the 9/11 disaster. I am the former Statewide Director of Project Liberty, the crises counseling and public education program launched by the New York State Office of Mental Health in response to the World Trade Center attacks, was the architecht of the Boston Marathon Bombing Behavioral Health Response Program and have responded to natural and human caused disasters in over 40 states. I have provided needs assessment and victim/family and provider forums for almost every mass violence event in the U.S. from 2015-2020 and during that same time period have trained hundreds of humanitarian aide workers for the European Union affiliated NGO's who are responding to the refugee crisis across Europe and Africa.

I have served as a health and mental health administrator in hospital settings, was the Director of Network Development for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the Director of the BP Oil Spill Distress Helpline (which is now the national Disaster Distress Helpline) and the 9/11 10th Anniversary Healing and Remembrance program. I have recently rejoined Vibrant Emotional Health (previously the Mental Health Association-New York CIty) as the AVP for National Crisis and Wellness Programs where I over see the Program Directors at the national Disaster Distress Helpline, the Veterans Crisis Line and the Lifeline Cares Team, a wellness based program for all of the staff who respond to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
